HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis Health Benefits:
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis belongs to the Bifidobacterium genus and is one of its core strains closely associated with human intestinal health. First isolated from the faeces of breastfed infants by Tissier in 1900, it was formally named Bifidobacterium adolescentisin 1924 due to its higher abundance in adolescent intestines. As a probiotic resident of the human gut, it possesses an excellent colonisation capacity and well-defined probiotic functions, as well as being food-grade safe. It is widely used in the food and health supplement industries, primarily for maintaining gut health and regulating immunity.
■ Source
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis was first isolated from the faeces of breastfed infants and adolescents. It is a natural component of the human gut microbiota and is particularly prevalent in the intestines of adolescents and adults. Although its abundance declines slightly with age, it remains one of the most significant beneficial bacteria in the adult gut. Its natural habitat is primarily the human gut, where it persists from infancy through to adulthood. It is also present in breast milk, the oral flora of healthy individuals and vaginal secretions, albeit in smaller quantities. It is a typical human commensal bacterium that exhibits high adaptability to the intestinal environment. Industrial production strains are predominantly isolated and selected from the faeces of healthy adolescents or adults. Following strain identification and verification of probiotic functions (acid and bile salt tolerance, intestinal colonisation capacity and antibacterial activity), as well as a safety assessment involving toxicological testing and antibiotic resistance screening, the strains undergo domestication.

HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis Applications:
As an indigenous commensal bacterium of the human gut, HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis is widely utilised in food, health supplements, and special dietary products thanks to its exceptional intestinal colonisation capacity, dietary fibre metabolic advantages, and well-established probiotic functions. It is used to maintain gut health, regulate immunity and optimise nutritional metabolism, catering to the needs of all population groups.
The core application areas for HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis include general foodstuffs (functional fortification), with dairy products being the most well-developed application. In fermented dairy products, freeze-dried bacterial powder is blended with Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus for co-fermentation, making up 20-40% of the total bacterial culture. Alternatively, sole fermentation can be employed to create products with a high content of bifidobacteria. In the case of milk powder products, the bacterial powder is added after the product has been sterilised and cooled to avoid high-temperature damage to bacterial viability. Synergistic effects are achieved by blending with prebiotics such as fructooligosaccharides and inulin. In functional beverages, freeze-dried bacterial powder is added after production and combined with prebiotics and natural fruit and vegetable juices to create products that are free from sugar and fat and that are gut-friendly.
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis is primarily used in health foods and dietary supplements. The core formulation for powder and granule products comprises freeze-dried B. adolescentis powder, prebiotics and protective agents. Certain formulations also incorporate Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus rhamnosus to provide the dual benefits of gut regulation and immune enhancement. Capsule and tablet formulations include microcrystalline cellulose and magnesium stearate as excipients for tablet production, and some capsules use enteric coating technology (HPMCP) to protect the strains from gastric acid.
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis constitutes part of the human gut microbiota and certain strains may be adapted to the intestinal environment of companion animals (cats and dogs) following domestication. Modulating the gut microbiota of pets in this way may alleviate diarrhoea, constipation and indigestion, making it particularly suitable for elderly animals, those recovering from surgery and pets with intestinal dysfunction.
As a dominant beneficial bacterium in the gut, HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis suppresses the growth and reproduction of pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens, as well as putrefactive bacteria, by competing with them for intestinal mucosal colonisation sites and nutrients. Its main advantage is its ability to efficiently metabolise dietary fibres to produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), such as acetate and propionate. This lowers the intestinal pH to below 5.5, creating an acidic environment that is unfavourable for harmful bacteria. It also secretes antimicrobial peptides, such as bifidopeptides, which directly disrupt the integrity of the cell membranes of pathogenic bacteria. This reduces the production of putrefactive by-products within the gut, such as ammonia, indole and hydrogen sulphide, thereby lowering the risk of intestinal inflammation.
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis enhances the intestinal barrier in two ways: first, it promotes the expression of tight junction proteins in intestinal epithelial cells. This reduces intercellular gaps and prevents incompletely digested macromolecules, allergens and endotoxins (such as LPS) from entering the bloodstream. Second, it metabolises short-chain fatty acids (particularly acetate) to supply energy to intestinal mucosal cells. This promotes mucosal repair and regeneration while alleviating inflammatory responses.
▶ Enhancing digestive absorption
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis produces several carbohydrate-active enzymes, such as β-glucosidase and arabinofuranosidase, which break down dietary fibre, which is often difficult for the human body to digest, into short-chain fatty acids. These provide energy for intestinal cells and enhance the nutritional value of dietary fibre. This makes Bifidobacterium adolescentis suitable for individuals with insufficient dietary fibre intake or weaker digestive function. Bifidobacterium adolescentis also regulates intestinal pH levels, thereby enhancing the activity of amylase, protease and lipase within the gut. This improves the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, proteins and fats, alleviating issues such as indigestion and loss of appetite. This is particularly beneficial for the elderly and individuals undergoing post-operative recovery.

■ Biological characteristics
HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis is a Gram-positive, strictly anaerobic bacterium that exhibits slender, rod-shaped or curved morphology. It grows optimally at temperatures ranging from 37 to 41°C (adapted to human body temperature) and an initial pH of 6.5 to 7.0. It is strictly anaerobic and highly sensitive to oxygen, being inactivated upon exposure to air. It exhibits heterofermentative metabolism, primarily producing acetate and lactate (in a molar ratio of approximately 3:1) without gas formation. It is capable of efficiently utilising diverse carbohydrates and is particularly adept at metabolising dietary fibres (e.g. inulin and fructooligosaccharides) and human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs). The breakdown of nutrients involves multiple carbohydrate-active enzymes, including β-galactosidase and β-glucosidase.
▶ Regulating intestinal motility
Richtek HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis metabolises short-chain fatty acids, which stimulate intestinal mucosal nerves and promote peristalsis. This increases faecal moisture content, as an acidic environment reduces intestinal water absorption. This softens stools and shortens the defecation cycle. B. adolescentis exhibits additional beneficial effects against traveller's diarrhoea and antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. It regulates microbial balance, enhances intestinal barrier function, reduces intestinal irritation and shortens the duration of diarrhoea.
■ Production process
The production process for HOLIVE®Bifidobacterium adolescentis involves strain activation, stepwise scaling-up of the seed culture, the core process of high-density fermentation, cell harvesting and washing for purification and enrichment, freeze-drying for protection and vacuum freeze-drying for key viability preservation technology, and post-processing and packaging for final product formulation. Using a composite carbon-nitrogen source, precise pH regulation and fed-batch fermentation achieves live bacterial counts exceeding tenfold those of traditional processes. Optimised lyophilisation stabiliser formulations elevate survival rates to 70-90%. Full-process aseptic control ensures food safety.
