The main sources of phytosterol ester is plants such as soya, pine, maize and rapeseed. Using specific chemical or enzyme-catalysed processes, phytosterol can be esterified or transesterified with fatty acids to produce phytosterol ester raw materials. EncapsuleX®Phytosterol ester powder is produced from raw materials by homogenisation, concentration and spray drying.

■ Technical characteristics

Microencapsulation technology treats the phytosterol ester as an 'inner core' to be protected, selects appropriate wall materials (such as proteins, polysaccharides or lipids) and uses a specific process to encapsulate the phytosterol ester into a tiny capsule structure.

Spray drying is one of the more common methods, in which the phytosterol and wall material solutions are mixed to form an emulsion. By spraying the emulsion into a stream of hot air through a sprayer, the solvent in the emulsion rapidly evaporates and the wall material solidifies to form microcapsules. This method is easy to use, has high production efficiency and is well suited to large-scale industrial production.
