herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract Health Benefits:

herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract is a natural ingredient derived from the Garcinia cambogia fruit. Due to its unique active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), it has gained widespread attention and is widely used in areas such as weight management and healthcare.

herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract Applications:

The HCA in herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract inhibits the key enzyme involved in fat synthesis, ATP-citrate lyase, in a competitive manner. This enzyme converts citric acid, which is produced during carbohydrate metabolism, into acetyl-CoA, the core raw material for fat synthesis. By blocking this process, HCA reduces the conversion of excess carbohydrates into fat, thereby decreasing fat accumulation in the body. HCA may also indirectly regulate appetite by influencing neurotransmitter levels, such as serotonin. Serotonin is associated with feelings of fullness, and HCA may increase its concentration to help alleviate hunger and strong cravings for carbohydrates, such as a dependency on sweets or starchy foods. This reduces total calorie intake.

The tamarind is a tropical fruit belonging to the Tamarindaceae family and the Tamarindus genus. It is native to southern India, Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. The fruit is round or oval in shape and resembles a citrus fruit. It is also known as the tamarind fruit. When ripe, it is orange-red in colour and has sweet and sour flesh. Tamarind has been used as a spice in curry powder since ancient times. For centuries, large quantities of this fruit have been cultivated in southern India and Thailand for use in herbal medicine. It is also found in Central and Western Africa. Garcinia cambogia is native to southern, southwestern and western China and is cultivated in Guangdong Province.

The HCA in herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract inhibits fat synthesis and suppresses appetite, making it a key ingredient in natural weight-loss supplements. It is the preferred raw material for weight loss and slimming supplements in Europe and the United States. More than 14 types of weight-loss supplement containing hydroxycitric acid have been launched on foreign markets, and various related supplements are also available on the Chinese domestic market. Garcinia cambogia extract can be added to meal replacement powders, health drinks and other functional foods. Some beverages incorporate Garcinia cambogia extract to leverage its appetite-suppressing and fat metabolism-regulating effects, thereby imparting weight-loss or weight-maintenance functionality to the beverages. herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract can also serve as a natural preservative, colouring agent and flavouring in food additives, and is suitable for use in meat products, juices, dairy products, sauces, sweets, biscuits and other foods.

herbgreey®Garcinia extract can also be used as a pharmaceutical raw material. It may have a certain auxiliary role in the treatment of some metabolism-related diseases due to its potential effects in regulating blood lipids and blood sugar; however, the research and application of related drugs are still in the exploratory phase. In Ayurvedic therapy, Garcinia extract is used to aid digestion and alleviate rheumatic diseases.

■ Active ingredients

Of the active components found in herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract, hydroxycitric acid (HCA) is the most important and has been the subject of extensive study. Its efficacy is directly linked to the primary application value of the extract. HCA is the most abundant and functionally critical active compound in Garcinia cambogia extract, typically accounting for 50–60% of standardised extracts. It is a derivative of citric acid with an additional hydroxyl group in its chemical structure. This confers HCA with unique physiological activity, enabling it to competitively inhibit the key enzyme in fat synthesis (ATP-citrate lyase) and reduce the conversion of carbohydrates into fat. It may also influence appetite by regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which is why herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract is used for weight management. herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract also contains trace amounts of flavonoids, polyphenols, vitamins (including vitamin C), minerals and other components. While these substances have antioxidant properties and may support metabolic health, their efficacy is far inferior to that of HCA, which is the core active ingredient of the extract.

HCA may promote glycogen synthesis and storage in the liver and muscles. This enables the body to prioritise glycogen for energy when needed and reduces reliance on fat breakdown (or reduces fat synthesis when glycogen levels are sufficient). This indirectly supports a balanced energy metabolism. Some animal studies and small human trials suggest that HCA may slow the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates in the intestines, reduce postprandial blood glucose fluctuations and help maintain stable blood glucose levels. This effect may be significant for individuals with metabolic syndrome or poor blood glucose control, but further large-scale human studies are needed to validate these findings.

 Metabolic health

The small amounts of flavonoids and polyphenols contained in herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract have antioxidant properties that can eliminate free radicals and reduce oxidative stress-related cell damage. These components may also help to inhibit mild inflammatory responses and support overall metabolic health indirectly, although this is not their primary benefit.

■ Extraction process characteristics

The production process for herbgreey®Garcinia cambogia extract primarily involves extracting and purifying the key active ingredient, hydroxycitric acid (HCA), from the peel of the garcinia fruit. Key steps in the process include raw material pretreatment, extraction, purification and drying, with component stability and purity also taken into account.

We select ripe, mould-free Garcinia fruit, remove the skin (from which the extract is primarily derived), discard the flesh and seeds, and wash the fruit in clean water. The peel is then dried using methods such as low-temperature drying, hot-air drying or vacuum drying. The temperature is kept below 60°C to prevent the degradation of HCA (hydroxycitric acid) due to high temperatures. The dried peel is then ground into a coarse powder with a typical particle size of 20-40 mesh, which increases the specific surface area and enhances extraction efficiency in subsequent processes. The objective of extraction is to transfer the HCA and other soluble components from the fruit peel into the solvent. The most common methods are solvent and water extraction, which can be performed multiple times with the extraction liquids combined. To optimise efficiency, reduce solvent usage and improve extraction efficiency, methods such as ultrasonic-assisted extraction (using ultrasonic vibrations to accelerate cell rupture and shorten extraction time) and microwave-assisted extraction (using microwave heating to enhance solvent penetration) are employed in industrial production.

The extract contains HCA, as well as small amounts of flavonoids, polysaccharides, pigments and residual impurities. These must be removed through filtration, adsorption, decolourisation and concentration in order to improve the purity of the HCA. The extract is then dried to produce a powder. Common methods include spray drying or vacuum freeze drying. The dried extract is then ground into a fine powder (80-100mesh) and sieved to produce a uniform powder suitable for subsequent formulations, such as capsules or tablets.
