herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract Health Benefits:
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract is a natural product obtained from the leaves of the ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba L.). The active ingredients and pharmacological effects of ginkgo extract have been studied for many years. These effects include dilating blood vessels, protecting vascular endothelial tissue, regulating blood lipids, protecting low-density lipoprotein, inhibiting platelet-activating factor and thrombus formation, and scavenging free radicals. Ginkgo extract is widely used in medicine and health products.

▶Protecting blood vessels
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract Applications:
Flavonoids can relax vascular smooth muscle, especially in the coronary arteries, cerebral blood vessels and peripheral blood vessels. This increases blood flow and improves tissue blood supply. herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract can improve peripheral circulation in the limbs, relieve numbness in the hands and feet, and alleviate intermittent claudication caused by poor blood circulation, such as the pain experienced when walking due to lower limb arteriosclerosis. Terpenoid lactones (especially ginkgolide B) are natural antagonists of platelet-activating factor (PAF), inhibiting excessive platelet aggregation and reducing the risk of thrombosis. They also play a role in the prevention of cardiovascular thrombotic diseases, such as cerebral infarction and myocardial infarction.
■ Source
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract comes from one source only: the dried leaves of the Ginkgo biloba plant, which belongs to the Ginkgoaceae family. Ginkgo is an ancient gymnosperm whose origins date back hundreds of millions of years, earning it the nickname 'living fossil'. Wild populations are primarily found in China, particularly in the Tianmu Mountains of Zhejiang Province. The tree is now widely cultivated in temperate regions worldwide. While other parts of the ginkgo tree contain certain components, they are not used as raw materials for ginkgo extract due to their high toxicity. For example, white nuts contain ginkgo toxin. The source of the extract is therefore strictly limited to the leaves.
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract is available in the following specification and contents:

herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract is used as a dietary supplement to prevent age-related cognitive decline and memory loss. It also improves blood circulation in middle-aged and elderly people and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, it should not be used as a replacement for medication. It alleviates common problems experienced by the elderly, such as cold hands and feet and limb weakness, which are caused by poor peripheral circulation. Ginkgo biloba extract can improve blood supply to the brain, thereby alleviating fatigue and enhancing mental alertness in individuals who engage in prolonged mental labour or experience high stress levels, leading to symptoms such as dizziness and difficulty concentrating.
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract is a commonly used pharmaceutical ingredient in clinical practice. It is used to alleviate symptoms such as dizziness, headaches and memory impairment caused by conditions such as cerebral hypoperfusion, cerebral thrombosis and cerebral infarction. Formulations include tablets and injections containing the extract. It is also used to complement the treatment of coronary heart disease and angina pectoris, helping to dilate the coronary arteries, increase the blood supply to the heart muscle (myocardium), and alleviate symptoms such as chest tightness and pain.
It is also used to treat peripheral arterial occlusive disease and thrombophlebitis, improving peripheral circulation and alleviating symptoms such as numbness in the extremities and intermittent claudication.
■ Active ingredients
The active components of herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract can be categorised into two main groups. Flavonoids (including quercetin, kaempferol and isorhamnetin, as well as their glycosides) account for around 24% of the extract, and are the key components responsible for its antioxidant properties and its ability to improve blood circulation. Triterpenoid lactones (including ginkgolides A, B, C, J and bilobalide) account for around 6% of the extract and exhibit antiplatelet aggregation and neuroprotective properties. The extract also contains trace amounts of amino acids and other elements. However, potential toxic components such as ginkgolic acid, which has cytotoxic and allergenic properties, are usually removed during processing.
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract may enhance memory, attention and processing speed by boosting cerebral blood flow, providing antioxidants and reducing neuroinflammation. Studies have shown that it may improve cognitive function in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia), although efficacy may vary among individuals. It may also be used to treat age-related memory decline. Flavonoids possess strong antioxidant properties, helping to neutralise free radicals, reduce oxidative stress-induced damage to neuronal cells, protect neuronal structure and function, and delay the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
▶ Neuroprotection and cognitive support
herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract can alleviate the symptoms of subjective tinnitus caused by impaired blood circulation in the inner ear (such as that commonly experienced by the elderly) and vertigo caused by Ménière's disease, by improving blood supply to the inner ear. It should only be used under the guidance of a doctor. Flavonoid components can inhibit the release of inflammatory factors and protect against tissue damage associated with chronic inflammation, such as retinal lesions and vascular damage caused by diabetes. Some studies suggest that it may alleviate mild to moderate anxiety and low mood by regulating neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (such as serotonin) when used alongside other interventions.

■ Extraction process characteristics
The production of herbgreey®Ginkgo biloba extract is a systematic process from raw material processing to purification and refinement. The core of this process involves using extraction and separation technologies to retain active components (such as flavonoids and terpenoid lactones) while removing harmful components (such as ginkgoic acid) and impurities.
Select dried leaves from healthy, adult Ginkgo trees, ensuring they are free from mould, pests and diseases and have low levels of harmful components such as ginkgoic acid. Leaves harvested in autumn have higher levels of active ingredients. The leaves should be rinsed quickly with clean water to remove surface impurities, then dried to meet moisture content standards and finally ground into a coarse powder. Extraction involves dissolving the active components in the leaves into a solvent. The most common method is solvent extraction, typically using water, ethanol or a water-ethanol mixture (with the ethanol concentration usually ranging from 50% to 70%). This method can dissolve flavonoids and terpenoids while minimising the extraction of lipophilic impurities. Microwave-assisted extraction uses microwave heating to enhance solvent penetration and component dissolution. This method offers the advantages of a short processing time and low energy consumption. Supercritical fluid extraction uses carbon dioxide as the supercritical fluid to extract components under high pressure. This method achieves high purity, but incurs higher equipment costs and is therefore primarily used for high-value products.
The extracted solution, referred to as the 'extract', contains large amounts of impurities, such as cellulose, chlorophyll and ginkgoic acid. Purification is required to retain the active components. We use filtration, adsorption separation and ginkgo acid removal methods to purify it.
The purified eluent is then concentrated and processed via spray or freeze drying to obtain ginkgo leaf extract powder. The final product must undergo testing to ensure it contains the required levels of active components (flavonoids≥24% and terpenoid lactones≥6%) and does not contain any harmful residual components. Once these standards are met, the extract can be used in pharmaceuticals, health supplements, and other applications.
