Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate Health Benefits:

Magnesium is an essential macronutrient for biological organisms. It activates numerous enzymes, maintains skeletal growth and neuromuscular excitability, regulates cardiac muscle cell function and inhibits potassium and calcium channels. It blocks outward currents in at least four distinct potassium channels, thereby preventing potassium efflux. As an activator of numerous enzymes, magnesium participates in over 300 enzymatic reactions. It is vital for the structure and function of bone cells, playing a key role in maintaining magnesium and mineral homeostasis within bones. Magnesium deficiency has been identified as a potential risk factor for osteoporosis in humans. Magnesium and calcium have similar effects on neuromuscular excitation and inhibition. If blood magnesium or calcium levels are too low, neuromuscular excitability increases, which can lead to muscle spasms and vasospasms. Conversely, adequate levels have a sedative effect. Magnesium deficiency primarily impacts calcium metabolism as it also affects calcium concentration. Hyperactive neuromuscular excitability is an early manifestation of deficiency, presenting as muscle tremors and spasms in the hands and feet, followed by ataxia, mental confusion, convulsions and coma. The effects on cardiovascular health primarily manifest as premature beats, atrial fibrillation, numbness, an abnormal heart rate and ECG abnormalities. Magnesium is abundant in green plants and plant-based foods such as whole grains, dried beans and nuts. However, since magnesium is primarily found in the outer layers of grain kernels, processing can lead to magnesium loss, resulting in lower magnesium content in refined grains. Magnesium can also be supplemented through dietary supplements.

Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is an organic magnesium salt formed by combining the anion gluconate with magnesium ions. Due to its excellent solubility, mild gastrointestinal tolerance and palatability, it is one of the most commonly used magnesium supplements in food fortification, health supplements and special dietary products. Its key advantages are low irritation and high acceptability, making it particularly suitable for individuals with sensitive stomachs, as well as children and the elderly.

Gentle magnesium supplementation

Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate Applications:

Modern populations often suffer from hidden magnesium deficiency due to diets high in processed foods and refined sugars, high stress levels, and excessive alcohol and caffeine consumption. Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is the preferred choice for low-irritation magnesium supplementation. The polyhydroxy structure of the gluconate ion reduces its binding with oxalic and phytic acids in the gut, stabilising magnesium absorption at 25-35% (significantly higher than the 4–10% absorption rate of magnesium oxide). This absorption process does not rely on specialised intestinal transporters, making it suitable for individuals with reduced absorption capacity (e.g. the elderly).

■ Core features

The chelation structures of Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate and magnesium glycinate differ. Magnesium gluconate is an ionic salt, in which magnesium ions bond with gluconate ions via ionic bonds. Although it lacks a cyclic chelate structure, the polyhydroxy structure of the gluconate ion reduces binding with oxalic and phytic acids in the intestines, thereby indirectly enhancing absorption efficiency. While Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate has lower bioavailability than magnesium glycinate, it outperforms traditional inorganic magnesium sources significantly and offers unique advantages. It exhibits excellent gastrointestinal tolerance and lacks the osmotic laxative effects of magnesium citrate or magnesium sulfate, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive stomachs, the elderly and children.

It has a mildly sweet taste without any metallic or astringent flavours, allowing it to be incorporated directly into beverages and complementary foods without affecting the flavour of the product. Its aqueous solution is clear and transparent with no precipitation, making it compatible with liquid foods (e.g. sports drinks and oral solutions) and semi-liquid diets. This offers strong processing adaptability.

Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is available in the following specification and contents:

  Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate 98.0-102.0%

Due to its mild, soluble and palatable properties, Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is widely used in three major areas: food fortification, health supplements and special dietary products. It is particularly well-suited to applications where taste and irritability are important considerations.

Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is used in the food industry for nutritional fortification and flavour enhancement. In sports drinks and electrolyte water, it works together with sodium and potassium to replenish electrolytes and alleviate post-exercise muscle fatigue, while its mild sweetness improves the taste of drinks. Children's beverages/fruit juices: Magnesium gluconate fortifies the magnesium content without imparting off-flavours, ensuring acceptance by children. Plant-based beverages (e.g. soy milk, coconut milk): Its addition compensates for magnesium deficiencies in plant-based drinks, while preventing precipitation with plant proteins and avoiding texture issues. In dairy and dairy alternatives: It is combined with calcium and vitamin D to promote bone health. Its mild formulation suits individuals with lactose intolerance. In baked goods and pastries: Magnesium gluconate fortification enhances magnesium levels and improves biscuit crispness. Its mildly sweet taste appeals to children.

In the health supplement sector, Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate is a gentle and precisely tailored supplement. Tablets and capsules are ideal for daily supplementation, and combining them with B vitamins improves the body's utilisation of magnesium. Flavoured powder/drink mixes with stevia and citric acid offer a refreshing taste after preparation, making them ideal for elderly individuals or children with swallowing difficulties. Gummies utilise pectin as a base and are crafted into fruit-flavoured varieties (e.g. orange and strawberry) to reduce the 'supplement feel' and appeal to younger consumers. Targeted efficacy products provide daily magnesium gluconate supplementation and gently promote intestinal motility to alleviate chronic constipation without causing irritation or dependency. Prenatal magnesium supplements combine folic acid and iron to gently provide the magnesium required during pregnancy (to prevent leg cramps in expectant mothers), without causing gastrointestinal irritation.

Adding magnesium gluconate to the diets of infants and toddlers provides a gentle formulation that does not irritate delicate intestines, meets daily magnesium requirements and does not affect the taste of complementary foods. In specialised diets for the elderly, it is suitable for seniors with weakened chewing ability and helps to alleviate constipation. For diabetic patients, the gluconate ion in magnesium gluconate is metabolised independently of insulin, so it does not raise blood sugar. This makes it a suitable source of magnesium that may help improve insulin sensitivity.

■ Production technology characteristics

The core requirements for producing Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate are a high level of purity and an absence of harmful residues, such as heavy metals, organic solvents and chloride ions. The production process must also comply with food-grade safety standards. The production process must focus on three key aspects: reaction efficiency, impurity control and product stability. Currently, the neutralisation reaction method is the only mature, large-scale production method, accounting for over 95% of the market, while biosynthetic methods remain at the laboratory stage.

This method is also known as the neutralisation reaction method. This method utilises the neutralisation reaction between gluconic acid (an acid) and magnesium oxide (an alkali) to produce magnesium gluconate and water. Through the dissolution-reaction-purification-crystallisation-drying process, high-purity magnesium gluconate monohydrate is obtained (the mainstream industrial product form, which is more stable than the anhydrous form). This process is well-established and cost-effective.

Unlike traditional magnesium supplements, such as magnesium sulphate and magnesium citrate, Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate causes minimal gastrointestinal irritation. This makes it the only magnesium source suitable for long-term gentle laxative effects. Traditional magnesium supplements work through osmotic laxation, creating a hypertonic environment in the intestines to draw water and soften stool. This process can disrupt intestinal motility and cause diarrhoea. Magnesium gluconate, however, works solely by gently promoting intestinal motility and increasing stool water content. It does not disrupt the balance of intestinal flora, and the gluconate ion helps to repair the intestinal mucosa by promoting the regeneration of mucosal cells.

 Gastrointestinal health

Magnesium plays a key role in regulating neurotransmitter synthesis and muscle contraction. Mineraux®Magnesium gluconatee stabilises neuromuscular excitability, alleviating cramps and fatigue. It inhibits the release of excitatory neurotransmitters, such as glutamate, in the central nervous system, while enhancing the activity of inhibitory neurotransmitters, such as GABA.

This reduces excessive nerve terminal excitation. Magnesium also plays a role in the binding and dissociation of actin-myosin, thereby preventing spasms caused by excessive muscle contraction. The gluconate ion promotes lactate metabolism, converting it to glucose and reducing post-exercise accumulation of lactate to alleviate muscle soreness.

The health benefits of Mineraux®Magnesium gluconate stem from its high bioavailability, low gastrointestinal irritation potential, good taste and the synergistic properties of magnesium and gluconate ions. Magnesium is an essential macromineral for the human body and participates in over 300 physiological reactions. The gluconate ion acts as a natural metabolic intermediate involved in glycolysis, reducing absorption barriers for magnesium ions while avoiding intestinal irritation.

Physical and Chemical Properties:

Although magnesium gluconate has lower bioavailability than magnesium glycinate, its low-irritation properties make it the preferred choice for improving sleep in individuals with sensitive stomachs and the elderly. Magnesium activates melatonin synthase, promoting melatonin secretion and synchronising the body's circadian rhythm. It also regulates GABA receptor activity, thereby enhancing the sedative effects of GABA, reducing night-time neural excitability and decreasing the frequency of night-time awakenings. The gluconate ion is non-irritating and therefore prevents night-time gastrointestinal discomfort that could disrupt sleep, unlike magnesium citrate which may cause night-time bloating.
