herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract Health Benefits:
herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract is a blend of active compounds derived from the roots of the tropical Southeast Asian shrub Eurycoma longifolia Jack, also known as 'Malaysian ginseng'. Traditionally valued for its ability to enhance vitality and regulate physiological functions, it is now a key ingredient in many dietary supplements and functional foods. The root contains bioactive alkaloids (such as eurycomanone), guaiacol lactones, flavonoids and other bioactive compounds, which are responsible for its core value.

herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract Applications:
In traditional Southeast Asian medicine, herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract has long been used to counteract the age- or stress-related decline in male physiological functions, such as reduced libido and low energy levels. Research suggests that its active compounds, eurycoma lactones (particularly eurycomanone), may exert their effects through mechanisms including regulating hormonal metabolism (mildly influencing testosterone levels), enhancing vasodilation (increasing local blood flow) and reducing oxidative stress (minimising cellular damage).
■ Source
Eurycoma longifolia is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Eurycoma genus within the Simaroubaceae family. It is primarily found in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Its growth cycle is relatively long, typically requiring 5-10 years before the roots possess extractable value. Due to excessive harvesting, wild resources have been protected, and current commercial production largely relies on standardised cultivation. The entire plant has medicinal properties, though the root is the primary source for therapeutic use. Its extracts offer multiple benefits, including enhanced physical stamina, reduced fatigue and antibacterial properties. Counted among Malaysia's three national treasures alongside bird's nest and tinware, it is one of Southeast Asia's most valuable medicinal plants. In traditional Southeast Asian medicine, Tongkat Ali has been used for centuries as a herbal remedy and tonic, both as a single-ingredient medicine and as a key component in compound formulas.
herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract is available in the following specification and contents:
☑ herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract powder 10:1/20:1/30:1/50:1
herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract is most commonly found in oral dietary supplements, which primarily target adults concerned with energy levels, male physiological health or fatigue resistance. Capsules and tablets address fatigue among office workers and manual labourers. Powder and liquid extracts can be added to beverages such as warm water or juice, and are suitable for individuals with specific formulation needs (e.g. those unable to tolerate capsules). Compound formulas are blended with other natural ingredients (such as maca, ginseng and epimedium) to enhance the energy and anti-fatigue effects. They can also be incorporated with vitamins and minerals (such as zinc and B vitamins) to provide more comprehensive nutritional coverage.
herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract has a long history of use in traditional medicine in its native regions, such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. It is primarily used in its raw herbal form or as crude extracts. It is traditionally used to alleviate joint pain and muscle soreness due to its potential anti-inflammatory effects, and is commonly consumed by boiling it in water or infusing it into medicinal wine. Supporting male health remains its core application in traditional usage. According to folk wisdom, it may address issues such as diminished stamina and reduced libido caused by ageing or stress. However, these applications are based on empirical use and lack modern medical validation.
Due to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of its active compounds, Eurycoma longifolia extract has been explored for use in anti-ageing skincare products in some in vitro studies.
It is hypothesised that this could improve skin roughness and redness by scavenging free radicals and reducing inflammation. In certain Southeast Asian regions, small-scale trials have investigated the use of low-concentration E. longifolia extracts in poultry, livestock and aquaculture. It is hypothesised that these extracts may enhance the vitality and disease resistance of farmed animals by regulating immune function and improving metabolism.
■ Active ingredients
The efficacy of herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract fundamentally relies on its unique active components, the composition of which is affected by different extraction processes. Well-defined key constituents currently include alkaloids, represented by eurycomanone, which is used as the main indicator for assessing the quality of extracts (commercially standardised extracts are often labelled according to their eurycomanone content, e.g. 0.5%, 1%). Eurycomanone is believed to regulate hormonal levels and enhance vitality. Lactones such as eurycomanol and eurycomalactone exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, thereby enhancing the extract's physiological effects. Flavonoids and polysaccharides such as rutin, quercetin and low-molecular-weight polysaccharides boost the extract's antioxidant capacity, mitigating the impact of oxidative stress on the body.
Traditionally, herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract has been used as a 'natural energy supplement' to alleviate physical and mental fatigue. Its antioxidant bitter lactones and flavonoids reduce the accumulation of fatigue-related oxidative by-products, such as lactic acid and reactive oxygen species. In vitro studies suggest that the extract may influence mitochondrial function, promoting ATP synthesis and indirectly enhancing physical endurance.
▶ Anti-fatigue
Inflammation is a key factor in many chronic diseases, including arthritis and metabolic syndrome. The anti-inflammatory properties of herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract have been demonstrated repeatedly in vitro and in animal studies. The compound eurycomanone in this extract downregulates NF-κB (nuclear factor kappa-B), a core signalling molecule in inflammatory responses, thereby reducing the release of pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF-α and IL-6. Flavonoids and polysaccharides work together to scavenge free radicals, breaking the vicious “oxidation-inflammation” cycle. Laboratory studies demonstrate the extract's mitigating effects on both acute (e.g. mouse paw swelling) and chronic (e.g. rat arthritis) inflammation. Traditionally, the extract has also been used to alleviate mild inflammation-related discomfort, such as joint pain and muscle soreness.

■ Extraction process characteristics
The production of herbgreey®Tongka Ali extract involves several steps, including 'raw material pretreatment-extraction- purification-drying', with the core objective being to ensure the retention rate and purity of the active components, particularly eurycomanone. The E. longifolia root is washed, sliced to a thickness of 2-5 mm, dried at temperatures of ≤60 °C to prevent the degradation of active components and ground into a 80-100 mesh powder to enhance extraction efficiency. In the extraction phase, ethanol-water mixed solvents (e.g. 70% ethanol) are typically employed for reflux extraction, while supercritical CO₂ extraction is more suitable for heat-sensitive components as there is no risk of solvent residue. Extractions are performed two to three times and the extracts are combined to ensure that the extraction efficiency of Eurycomanone is ≥90%. Purification involves macroporous resin adsorption to remove impurities such as starch and cellulose, followed by membrane filtration to trap macromolecular impurities. The extract is then concentrated to obtain a paste with a solid content of at least 50%. The extract can then be spray-dried (inlet temperature 180-200 °C, outlet temperature 80-90 °C) or freeze-dried under vacuum (for superior retention of active components) to obtain a powdered extract. This can then be processed into the final dosage form, such as capsules or tablets.
